The girls are part of a local reading program that dishes out royal prizes each time they reach a new goal. Millie finished Goal #1, and, as if reading isn't a pleasure and reward unto itself, in addition to getting a $20 gift card to Barnes & Noble, she and her immediate family (that's us!) were invited to a graduation party at the local minor league ballpark. Not only did they mail us admittance tickets, but they gave us tickets for free hot dogs, chips, sodas, and Good Humor bars. For Pete's sake, who wouldn't want to read?!
We watched an inning or two, picked up our food, and then I took one picture of the game and one picture of Su and I shoving hot dogs in our mouths before the rain came down.
We stayed another inning through the rain, but it was a cold night, and it was already past nine, so we slipped out early. The girls were in ecstacies over the entire thing and are already planning next year's exploits. Hopefully, the people behind the program will be crazy enough to repeat it, 'cause I know some crazy little girls who are banking on it.
Now, that is a nice reward for reading. I hope the sponsors will repeat the offer, as well, because this photo is priceless!
ReplyDeleteMuch love!
Wow! That's an intense amount of reward for reading. I never needed the bribes children got for undertaking the task of devouring books, either, but I certainly didn't mind that I got to partake.
ReplyDeleteMillie did have to read about 2 to 2 1/2 hours a day to get there, but she does that, anyway, so where's the work?! She was so proud to be able to treat us to this night, though.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling any child who "graduated" this program doesn't need these plump carrots in order to read, but, like you and us, they're probably happy to munch them, anyway!
That first picture is FABULOUS!
ReplyDeleteWish PA would get on the NY Reading Is Rewarding bandwagon!
