As we walk the streets and see below us those delightful bulbous heads, three times too big for the body, which mark these human mushrooms,
we ought always primarily to remember that within every one of these heads there is a new universe,
as new as it was on the seventh day of creation.
In each of those orbs there is a new system of stars,
new grass, new cities, a new sea.
(Wonderful words by G.K. Chesterton, who, I'm nearly sure, would have liked this mushroom baby and her toes. And I think he would have chuckled at her apt woodland party costume, probably saying, "Why bother making a hat? It'd be easier to simply paint her bulbous head all red and spotted!"))
Those are words I have never read of Chesterton...and I really, really love them.
ReplyDeleteAnd her- I love that girl too.
They're from his essay "In Defence of Baby Worship," which is wonderful for its words about babies but yet more for the illuminating and somewhat unexpected conclusion.
ReplyDeleteYou can find it on chesterton.org. Just plug "babies" into the search bar, and it should pop right up. Ha! Actually, you'd better not plug babies into a search bar. Sounds cruel.
p.s. Actually, to read it in its entirety, just google the essay's title.
