This winter has been rich with snow, and we've only seen bare ground a few weeks out of the season. Before you feel sorry for John Wayne, let it be known that I took this picture after trying to coerce him inside. He refused.
He's not the only wild beastie around here who feels at home in the snow, either. I looked out the window to see a lion trudging across the top layer of the backyard snow.
He walked through the bitter wind to a tree and commenced digging in the snow with his paws. When he returned, I asked what he was searching for. "My telescope," he said. He'd left it on a pile of snow the day before, and then night came and dumped another four inches on us and buried it.
He found it in the first spring thaw.
