Mama Hen

Here's the most recent batch of chicks that hatched. Millie wanted me to get a picture of them before they completely feathered out, and I just barely made it.


Millie is so maternal with her chickens.

 Sophie, the feathered (real) mama, ran frantically over to find the origin of all the cheeping.

 And this favorite of the bunch is Carrot Cake. For any among you who've read N.D. Wilson's Outlaws of Time series, the children and I get a kick out of how much his character Millie Miracle resembles OUR Millie. They're both the oldest of the family and love cooking, bossing, and chickens. In one of the books, Millie Miracle names a chick "Carrot Cake," so here, life imitates art.

 At last, a disgruntled Sophie is reunited with her babies.
