Our bridge was closed because the highway was completely flooded, and a few minutes down the road the opposite direction from our house, the road was covered, as well. We are on a slight slope across the road from the river, and completely escaped even a hint of the devastation we saw in other areas.

Fun, fun. I saw areial shots of the highway down near where you are located. Amazing stuff.
I know some friends who went out sight-seeing down in Greene whilst the flooding was still in progress. To make a long story short they drove across the bridge when the water was right up to the bottom of the deck, and then walked back across the bridge taking pictures. They got to the other end and the police closed the bridge as no longer safe . . . and so they were stuck on the opposite side of the bridge from their vehicle.
To retrieve their vehicle they had to take a second car through a lot of back roads and had to cross water so deep it almost shorted out the spark-plugs.
Some people have all the excitement.
The pictures that floored me were the ones from the nearly covered McDonalds in Binghamton.
I went to the Johnson family reunion this past Saturday, and on the way home my dad drove us through Conklin. There were stretches along the road where the houses that weren't condemned were few and far between.
(I'm glad that excitement passed over our door lintel.)
