Two More

Because I have them.

For the Grandmas

When Aidan was a week old, we attended Simeon and Marissa's lovely wedding by the lake.

And-- wait for it!--

I commandeered Mercy to snap a picture of our family.  All together.  At one time.  In one frame!
 Here ya go.

Summer Napping

...on Papa and Mama's bed.

In sleep, all sweetness.

'Tis the Season

...for fledglings to nearly get run over by the lawn mower.

Don't worry.  John rescued it and brought it to Millie, and Millie

let Susie, who was worried for its health, hold it, and Susie,

together with Millie, put it in a cramped cage in order to observe it for injuries (a.k.a. maybe we can keep it), but when whistling didn't ease its trauma,

Millie let it perch on her finger instead,

from whence it flew to her shoulder, where it happily sat for a time while she stroked it.

We have a tolerable ending to this story.  Millie walked down the road to place it somewhere away from our Diana-huntress cat Fruity, and half a mile down the road, she noticed a mother bird chirping and watching her anxiously from a nearby tree.  She put the fledgling in the tree, and, voila, the mother bird joined it, and they flew onto the ground together.

The End.

Potent

Babies are better than sleeping pills.  I'm out within minutes.

Girl Child

The quality of this snapshot is lacking, but I post it because of Piper's expression.  She asks to hold Aidan many times a day, and I'll catch her gazing at him with the truest love.  I love seeing in my children qualities I didn't have as a child.  I played with dolls for hours and had great affection for my "babies," but I grew up sandwiched between brothers and neighbor-boy-cousins.  One sister was too old, the other too young, and I had no regular playmates who were girls.  I was a thrill-seeker and a madcap, as rough-and-tumble as any of them, and took great pride in scrapes, bruises, and scars-- the badges and medals of a tomboy.  I planned to grow into a circus clown or a globe-trotting old maid and never once recall telling my mother that I wanted to get married (yuk!) when I was big so that I could have babies.  Several of my girls tell me this, though, and I know better now.

The life of a circus clown has nothin' on this.

The Lower Garden

Several weeks back, John cleared a rectangle of weeds and green down by the road so that my dad could plow and drag the earth for a new tomato patch.

Ezekiel is madly in love with all vehicles, especially loud, mechanically powered ones, and he didn't seem to appreciate the camera's interruption.

He did, however, enjoy pointing at the tractor a lot.

He waved, too.  He waved without ceasing.  It's a Big Noisy Thing, Mechanically Powered!!!  Proper protocal as follows:  wave, wave, wave, wave, wave....

Then, oh, blissful day!  He got to ride around on The Noisy Thing!!!

I learned that he doesn't mind cameras when he's in the driver's seat.

Baths are Pointless

When John's parents were here, his dad alerted me to the fact that I'd already successfully grown a pumpkin in the newly plowed lower garden.

Really?

So I looked out the window.

Sure enough.

I made pumpkin soup for supper that night.

Also.

We put several wagonloads of aged manure on the garden, as usual.

Zeke doesn't need a sandbox or a wood shavings box or a corn kernals box,

because he's got a giant pile of manure to keep him busy.

Philosophers are Good for Nothing

But wait!!!!  Is that my brother Joel, taking a break from the dissertation that will earn him a doctorate in philosophy, holding a shovel?!  Is that a good for nothing philosopher digging 124 holes for tomatoes when he could be reading Sonic the Hedgehog comics instead?!  Is that Joel volunteering to work in 85 degree heat so that we don't have to?!

As implausible as it all sounds, I have this picture for proof.
 (Joel, we owe you big-time.)

Pumpkins

For Molly.

We saved leftover seeds from last year, and the girls planted them along with their hopes for pie, breads, and soups.  Here's to Texas-sized pumpkins this year!

Aponi Joi

(Picture of my parents, my brothers and sisters, and all the nieces and nephews.  Yup. That's twenty-five children spread between the four siblings who are married with children.  And, yup.  they're awesome!)

For the first time in two years, we get to see Andy, Wendy, and the cousins!  They're on a two-month vacation, and we've been soaking up as much as we can before the bush-plane flies them back in August.  Aponi just graduated from high school, and they hosted an enormous party at my uncle's pond.  They poured so much work into all the details, and we had a wonderful time.

So wonderful, in fact, that I barely took any pictures.

Cousins reunited (this is for you and Cass, Becky).

They even served up a s'mores bar.

This was a huge hit with Simeon and Annika both, not to mention Annika's sweet-toothed mother.

Zeke mostly liked the pond.
