The Gardens in September

By September, though the garden harvest was only middling, the flowerbeds were in their full glory. Most of these pictures are drab, but the reality was not. Susannah's hard work in her cutting beds resulted in a lush jungle of color by the lower garden, which delighted us both and was worth all the labor. The only imperfection was that last summer's near drought delayed the blossoms significantly, so some varieties didn't have time to produce seeds we could collect before multiple hard frosts arrived.*

*As I write this, it's early March, and I'm waiting for my seed order to arrive. Guess who bought
(along with the practical vegetable seeds) WAY TOO MANY FLOWER SEEDS remembering just how lovely they were last fall?

**The pretty pictures in this post were by Susannah. The drab ones were by yours truly.

It's so much work but summer would be sooooooooooooo much less beautiful without gardens.
