Leftovers

Another sign of September's cooling temperatures is that indoor blanket forts began to sprout again.

They built this fort on a different day than the fort featured in the previous two pictures, despite the misleading fact that Ezekiel is wearing the exact same outfit.

I don't know why this was in with my pictures. I didn't take it! I was in NY, and they were in NC.
But seeing Annika so happy with her grintwin makes me happy.

Those of you who have seen previous harvests we've gathered with wheelbarrows and wagons can see why the gardens were disappointing last year. FIVE pumpkins from almost 40 plants. Four delicata from almost 40 plants. A handful of hot peppers from 20 plants, and the smallest smattering of beans from a few re-sown bean plants that finally blossomed right before September arrived.

Part of a bowl of small onions from almost 300 onion sets.

And fewer potatoes at harvest than we put in the ground at springtime.

I'm putting these pictures here as a sign of God's power and provision. We worked just as hard last summer as we do every year, and yet God's hand withheld harvest. This year promises to be a greater harvest by far, and though we've worked hard, it's clear that it is not our labor that brings the fruit.

And those tables groaning from their load of free fruit and vegetables that I've been posting lately?  God's hand is there, too. While we lamented our lack of harvest, God flooded us with bountiful provision, even more than we would have received had our gardens produced as we hoped.

Aidan ate a fresh bean!

The children made a nest.

And then filled it with eggs.
