A Lesson

Pain will bear fruit.
Like Athena leaping forth
From her father's cloven skull
They spring to mind,
Fully formed from place apart.

Words as keen as the spear she bore,
Beside and before.
Quietly fit and geared for war,
Unwilling to give way.

Skills to seek and sharpen,
Given freely

Hold it lightly

Bright beauty, piercing,
in the morning

Hold it lightly

Strength in limbs and lungs,
Coursing vigor

Hold it lightly

Friend of friends, my Heart,
Who walks beside

Hold it lightly

Children, flesh of flesh,
Who liven all

Hold it lightly

The Spirit keeps bringing this phrase to mind in all manner of situations lately. I've been thinking on the balance between fully appreciating the gifts God gives through no merit of our own and gratefully recognizing that they are gifts over which He retains ownership. Ours to use, ours to delight in, and ours to treasure, but not ours to clutch or grasp. They are gifts we hold for a time, not for all time, and to God be thanks and glory for it all.
