John's been teaching Millie chess in hopes that someday she'll do what I won't (that is, to play him without knocking pieces over in frustration).

The wife of my youth has the same reaction when we play chess. Our board however is a travel version and hence the pieces are smaller and that much more fun to find if I keep typing this will be the longest sentence ever in the history of chess championshipness.

My sister had that same reaction when we play chess too... until she discovered she could actually beat me. :o)

Millie's pretty bright to be picking up chess at her age. I'm Impressed (also with her father, for having the patience to teach her. :D)

Glad I'm not the only one frustrated by those baffling squares of light and dark...

I played chess a bit with one of my older brothers and didn't enjoy it until I beat him once (a fluke). I've never played a full game with John. Not a one. I give up within minutes. (I know it's pathetic.)

John is one of the most patient people I know. Millie hasn't learned the moves yet; she's only learned names and positions (which isn't too bad considering this was a short lesson), but she loved every minute of it.
