AN OUTRAGEOUS WASTE OF TIME AND TYPE
Ever since I told Millie how good mayapples taste when they're yellow, she checks every one she sees. They haven't even formed on the plant yet, though, and, besides, those plump squirrels would probably eat them before she could even find one.

I love mayapples. They especially look neat in big patches, in the late afternoon when the sun is gleaming off of them. We have them in various spots in the woods and secret garden, and plenty of squirrels to eat their apples! I didn't realize their "apples" tasted good. I figured they'd probably taste yucky like acorns (although now you'll probably tell me they taste good, too. I suppose it depends on whether or not you get a rotten one!)
They do taste so good! They're slightly poisonous when not ripe, though, so they should only be eaten when yellow. One of my favorite springy searches as a kid involved the hunt for ripe, yellow mayapples. (That, and fiddleheads, which we would hunt with my dad. I did not eat the fiddleheads with him, though I happily hunted.)
Stay away from the rotten acorns. Blech
i keep thinking about this picture. i keep thinking about mayapples.
i can't wait for you all to be closer to here!
we, either!
