We marched there and back to their bursts of unsteady pitch. Faces peered from windows.

Well, good. I'm glad a bunch of bored people stuck inside during a drizzly cloudy day got to see a parade of girls in brightly colored raincoats playing harmonicas full blast. Someone's got to provide entertainment for everyone else stuck inside.
I can just see it now: Brightly-dressed munchkins, trooping down the sidewalk, their chilly fingers grasping their harmonicas, as they warble away with a lusty "Squawk, squawk, squawk," to the soft thudding of their boots on wet pavement. Those window-faces must have been quite as amused as I!
I hope the people were amused! I certainly felt like a glaring thumb as no one else was on the streets, and the people who peered out, at least on our street, looked like they worked the night shift.

That would have been a great sight!
