Gifts One

Slings for their babies. The girls always ask me to tie receiving blankets-- the ones I used to swaddle Millie in five years ago-- around them, but they doesn't always work well. Babies fall out in mid-swing or mid-jump and suffer lacerations, bumps, and all manner of nasty bruises. So, this was my first order of business.

I found dollar-a-yard fabric that they both liked, tucked under edges, sewed straight lines, made a simple box pleat, sewed on rings, added distinguishing trim, and, voila, slings!

Annika appreciates that hers allows for hands-free singing of the alphabet.

Millie appreciates hers, period.

(I have yet to make Susannah's, but she doesn't mind.)

You remind me of the necessity of finishing. . .I seem to be continually caught up in the prospect of catching two birds that I never a single one in my hands. I'm trying to mend my ways, but it's not easy.

I seem to be so continally caught up in the prospect of catching tow birds taht I never actually have a single one in my hands.

I really wish blogger allowed an "edit your comment" feature, because, I don't think I've yet managed to leave a comment today without accidentally dropping words. Hopefully you can guess at what I'm trying to say, anyway!

Those slings are WONDERFUL! Another friend of mine did the same thing for HER girls this Christmas and I oogled hers too. I had plans to steal her idea and now have even more determination to follow through seeing THESE beauties.

Of course, I have wanted one for MYSELF for many years...I should think I could do one for me one of these days. Not that there is a reason...yet.

Millie looks to ADORE that thing. That is SO precious!

BTW~Where did you get the metal rings? Where ever that was, were there adult size rings available?

Titi,
I think it helps that I'm such a novice seamstress and choose simplistic projects that won't trip me up. If only I'd taken advantage of all that time in my mom's house growing up!!!! I learned barely anything from her because I was too impatient to SEW or KNIT or EMBROIDER or blahblahblah when she offered to teach me...all those things I now wish I'd learned well from her when I had the luxury to sit in her sewing room, undistracted, for hours on end.

I wager that if your projects were little, straight-edge slings, you'd have many birdy fistfuls! Don't get me wrong, though; I love and envy the intricate things you make. Someday, hope I...

Rebecca,
And here I thought I invented the idea!

I bought the mini rings at Joann's in a package of four for a $1.50. They have more expensive, larger ones, but these half-mooners suited the purpose well enough. I believe Leah bought the rings for the sling she made me after Millie was born at Joann's, also. They're large and heavy-duty, and the salesladies should be able to easily direct you to them.
