Valentine's Day

Just assume that all outer edges of these pictures look like the outer edges here, please.  There, now you can enjoy these pristine photos of our Valentine's day breakfast and tea party.

John and I don't celebrate Valentine's Day, unless one of us is sneaky and really wants to surprise the other. We celebrate The Feast of the Three Hierarchs, instead, and we welcome you to join us!

The preceding truth is why I don't quite know how our practice of having a pink, heart-shaped breakfast and an afternoon tea party on Valentine's Day has become a solid tradition.  It began several years ago when I wanted to do something easy and fun for the girlies, but this year we invited guests, too, which means it must have moved up the rungs to become Tradition.

Here's the secret to preparing a Valentine's breakfast.

1. Make a regular breakfast, just like normal, only cut everything into hearts and color them pink.
2. Use a tablecloth and different plates.
3. If you're lucky, a heart-shaped bubble will form in one of the pancakes.
4. DO NOT take a picture of the dirty dishes on the counter in the background or of the crusty floor beneath your feet.

Done!

And here's the secret to preparing a Valentine's tea party.

1. Defrost free carbohydrates the day before, dip them in chocolate, and grate chocolate on top of the ones that you do not dip.
2. Unpack the Valentine's day candy that Grandma O. mailed for the girls and heap it in pretty bowls.  Do the same with the leftover peppermint marshmallows she gave us at Christmas.

3. Cut potato bread that your neighbor just gave you into heart shapes.  Top with sharp cheddar and toast all at once in the oven.  Burn the first batch horribly and feed the chickens the charred remains.  Make a second batch properly.
4. Pull out the homemade maple sugar candy, peppermint patties, and buckeyes leftover from the batches you mailed to your Alaskan family and arrange them prettily on a dish.

5. Make lots of tea (easy!)
6. Use cloth napkins.
7. Do NOT take any pictures of the living room or upstairs of your house to include in this post.

Done!

I told her that, and she laughed.

She thinks you need your eyes checked. :)

(I think you're right, though.)
