Giver of Life

Cassidy Black sat and sat and sat. After we cracked open a chick one morning for breakfast, I learned my lesson and began candling the eggs in her clutch and telling egg-gatherers that her pile was Off Limits.

By then, the clutch was down to four eggs, and only two of those were viable.

It's a simple thing, but that first little beak tap-tapping away was a thing of wonder.

It was so much fun to peek at two curious chicks who popped from under Cassidy's wings at night before scurrying right back, hidden in the fluff of her feathers. They were so lively, and watching Cassidy's close care of them made me understand the Father with a fresh immediacy.

It was a gift.
